Our Program

Adena Health’s Internal Medicine Residency Program has a history of developing tomorrow's internists through a program that features a committed faculty, comprehensive curriculum and modern training facilities.

Adena Health System’s Internal Medicine Residency Program strives to produce high-quality internists who are well-prepared to enter the medical community.  Founded in 2013, our three-year comprehensive program has achieved ACGME “Continued Accreditation” status and is supported by committed faculty members, a robust didactics curriculum, and modern training facilities on a beautiful campus.

Adena Regional Medical Center, the program’s primary clinical site, is a 266-bed facility with a 15-bed intensive care unit located on Adena Health System’s main campus in Chillicothe, a city in Southern Ohio.  The health system provides an array of services and specialties to the more than 400,000 people with diverse backgrounds and cultures who call this region home, resulting in a broad experience in medical disease for the resident.

Our program utilizes a multi-faceted, integrated approach to the post-graduate training of the internist.  Residents receive direct, hands-on experience with a high volume of diverse pathologies as well as ample exposure to core competency content areas.  A hospital-based faculty, in association with attending physicians, maintains a scientifically-based, clinically-oriented, and humanistic medical service.  Teaching services within the program ensure the resident receives a proper, educationally-sound caseload with graduated levels of responsibility.  Daily teaching rounds are supplemented by a didactics curriculum comprised of key, board-relevant topics and specialty conferences.  Throughout the training period, continuity clinic (one half-day each week) provides a longitudinal experience for continuous management of chronic disease in the ambulatory setting.

Application Requirements

The Graduate Medical Education Committee reviews the selection/interview criteria for resident candidates annually.  The residency program is interested in identifying candidates with a strong commitment to internal medicine who have the documented educational background and/or experience to succeed in residency training in internal medicine.  Application through the Electronic Residency Application Service is required; excellent communication skills are expected – as is a clear commitment to the philosophy of internal medicine.  Preference is given to graduates from medical school in the last two years (or those who have pursued medical education since graduation) and those who have passed COMLEX or USMLE 1 & 2 on their first attempts.  Candidates may be screened for a history of unprofessional behavior that might be of concern by the American Board of Internal Medicine professionalism requirements. It is the policy of Adena Health System not to sponsor individuals for immigration status unless warranted by exceptional circumstances and/or business necessity. All residents must be eligible for a training certificate from the Ohio State Medical Board and have verified graduation from a US medical school (or be an ECFMG certified graduate of an international medical school).  All residents must be able to be insured for professional liability through the Adena Health System insurer.
