Student athlete dreads an injury that could threaten one of the few seasons available during his high school career.
From sprains and strains to breaks and more complex issues involving the hip, knee, and back, Adena Sports Medicine offers a broad range of treatment options for patients of all ages.
With access typically found only at big institutions, our sports medicine providers serve athletes and non-athletes alike, treating injuries via a full range of non-invasive treatments to get you moving again — all close to home.
Every patient receives a thorough assessment and personalized recovery plan for orthopedic injuries of the bones, ligaments, and tendons. We manage underlying problems to significantly reduce the likelihood of recurrence, address the emotional and psychosocial aspects of injury care, and develop a plan for long-term physical health that includes strength, flexibility, and stamina.
Our orthopedic center is meticulously designed with your care and convenience at the forefront. Offering the latest technology and a coordinated care approach, we are dedicated to effectively addressing your pain. This means that your appointment day can be maximally efficient: you may have the opportunity to consult with multiple doctors and potentially complete all necessary tests (subject to your insurance coverage). Upon departure, you will be equipped with a diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan aimed at restoring function and comfort.
For those facing more complex issues, our entire team collaborates to formulate a treatment plan that promises the most favorable outcomes. This might necessitate more than one day for thorough testing, consultation, and careful deliberation of the optimal strategies to successfully manage your condition, which may involve consulting with a surgeon.

We offer baseline tests of their brain in a healthy state so that, in the event of a concussion, doctors can compare the normal function of their brain with any injury to better help their recover.
In the event of an immediate concussion concern, our sports medicine department also offers same-day testing as well as a treatment plan including mental and physical rest.
If you or your student-athlete receive a concussion, immediate testing and treatment are important. Most concussion issues last around 7-10 days, and treatment includes mental and physical rest. That includes no running, jumping, weight lifting, drills, gym class, video games, television, texting, or other tasks that require a lot of focus and concentration. In some cases, athletes are even held from school to allow the brain to rest.
As every student athlete and coach knows, strains, sprains and injuries are part of the game. That’s why Adena Health has Saturday morning injury clinics for fall sport athletes. The clinics are open to all fall athletes in Adena’s nine county service area on a first come, first-serve basis beginning at 9AM. Student athletes suffering from common injuries of the knee, ankle and wrist as well as concussions are encouraged to come to the Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute in Chillicothe for the clinic.

Accidents happen, and so do fractured bones. No matter your age, Adena Sports Medicine can provide the best fracture treatment in south central Ohio. A fracture can often be diagnosed with a physical exam. In some cases, an X-ray, MRI or CT scan may be used. Once a fracture is diagnosed, treatment may include:
We offer stem cell treatment for arthritis, a procedure in which your body's own stem cells are harvested, processed, and injected into arthritic areas. Once placed, the stem cells divide and multiply, helping to regenerate healthy tissue that aids in healing and can lessen pain and loss of movement.
Found to be highly effective, Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP therapy is an application of orthobiologics that uses healthy cells to treat damaged or diseased cells in the body. For many patients, PRP can be used in the treatment of common tissue injuries, such as rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendon ruptures, tendinitis, muscle injuries, arthritis-related pain, and joint injuries. With PRP, platelets are drawn from the patient and “super charged” through a centrifuge. They are then injected into that patient’s damaged tissue to aid healing and re-growth.
The treatments take place in the exam room, and are applied through an injection. The entire process takes only 30-45 minutes. Some conditions may require several injections to help heal the damaged tissue. Currently, patients with abnormal platelet function or a low platelet count, anemia, cancer or an infection cannot receive PRP therapy.
“Our physicians are all community advocates for the betterment of the nine counties Adena Health serves. The time, attention, care, and diligence that each brings to their practices and their patients is bar none.”
