Program Overview
Mission
To train future sports medicine physicians in the medical and non-operative orthopedic care of athletes and other individuals in a rural community setting.
- Our program has a wide exposure to individuals of all ages and backgrounds presenting with musculoskeletal issues. Fellows spend the majority of their time in the sports medicine outpatient clinic evaluating and treating a wide variety of presenting complaints including acute and chronic musculoskeletal complaints, fractures, and sports concussions.
- The program offers close collaboration and individual rotation experiences with orthopedic surgeon and spine specialists who are part of the overall treatment team at Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute. The program provides increased exposure to pediatric orthopedics through an elective rotation at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH.
- In addition, fellows have the opportunity for an elective four week wilderness medicine rotation to further augment the care of the recreational athlete one often finds in the rural community setting.
- Outside of the time spent in clinic the fellow will gain experience in sports pre-participation physicals, sideline and mass participation coverage, and research opportunities.

About
Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute (AOSI) is located in southern Ohio and serves primarily a rural/blue collar population. Our fellowship offers a unique rural experience in a large multispecialty orthopedic and spine office with a plethora of acute and chronic injuries. Our primary care sports medicine physicians work closely with orthopedic surgeons, foot/ankle surgeons, spine surgeons, interventional pain management physicians, and neurologists to care for a population spanning a nine county service area. Rotations will offer a mix of fracture care, sports injuries, chronic orthopedic/musculoskeletal complaints, dedicated procedure visits, and imaging reviews – working with a good mix of patient ages.
The fellow will have a broad sports medicine exposure to high school athlete care/injuries through sideline and training room coverage. They also will have exposure to the planning and execution of medical coverage for mass participation events.
To augment training and further exposure to the medical care of non-traditional sports (i.e. climbing, rafting, hiking, caving) our fellowship program encourages, and will cover the cost of a four week Wilderness Medicine elective with either the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) or the Wilderness Medical Society to allow the fellow to gain additional certification in wilderness medicine.
The clinical experience the fellow will obtain during their year with us will provide a strong foundation for a career in sports medicine especially as it pertains to non-operative orthopedic care in a rural setting.
