Know the facts. Schedule your mammogram.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to support those affected and remind ourselves of the life-saving power of early detection. For many women, a mammogram is the first step toward peace of mind. It could also be the step that saves your life.
Fast facts about breast cancer
- 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime
- 42,250 women are expected to die from breast cancer in 2024
- 67% of women age 40 and older had a mammogram in the past two years, meaning 1 in 3 are not getting screened as recommended
- When found early, the five-year survival rate is over 99%. That drops to just 32% when diagnosed at a later stage
- Black and American Indian/Alaska Native women face higher mortality rates, often due to later diagnoses and less access to care
Early detection saves lives
Breast cancer often has no symptoms when it is small and more treatable. That is why regular mammograms matter. The American Cancer Society recommends:
- Annual screenings starting at age 40 for women at average risk
- Earlier and more frequent screenings for women with a higher risk, such as a family history or genetic mutations
