Kanchan Malhotra, MD, finds the most rewarding aspect of working in rheumatology to be the continuity it offers — and the relationships that come with it.
"Because we see patients regularly and follow them over time, you really get to understand not just their disease, but their lives," Dr. Malhotra said. "That helps build trust and leads to better results for our patients."
At Adena Health, Dr. Malhotra cares for patients across the spectrum of autoimmune disease, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and other, less common conditions. What is exciting about working in an ever-changing field, she said, is seeing the evolution of the drugs and targeted therapies that make treatment even more effective.
"Now, we have so many options that can help slow or even stop disease progression in ways that weren't possible before," Dr. Malhotra said.
That's important, she said, as is early intervention in addressing autoimmune conditions.
"When treating patients with, for instance, rheumatoid arthritis, the goal is to stop any deformities from occurring in the first place because once they do occur, they can impact the ability to do some of the things we need to do or enjoy doing in life."
Having both an efficient and compassionate office staff, as well as the ability to get to know her patients well over time, helps greatly in the treatment of autoimmune conditions.
"In rheumatology, one of the amazing things is we're seeing our patients regularly, getting their lab results and monitoring how they are doing on their medication," she said. "That allows me to see how they are doing with the treatment and drugs we're prescribing and connect with them on a personal level. I really enjoy that part."
Dr. Malhotra found herself on a medical career path from an early age, having been exposed to medicine through physician family members and some educational opportunities to shadow medical providers. Her interest in the science around rheumatology and exposure to engaging mentors in the field help her determine her specialty.
Now, she cherishes the opportunity she has to work with her patients to make their lives better.
