Like many people, Kaylynn Ross didn’t really have a clear idea of what a midwife does —until she needed one.
Fifteen years following the birth of her first child, Kaylynn was approaching the birth of her second, and was about to have her first experience with Adena Health’s team of certified nurse midwives and a fresh appreciation for what they bring to care.
“I thought with a midwife, things would be a little less involved and they just deliver babies,” Kaylynn said. “I didn’t realize everything the midwives actually do. You generally don’t think of them providing care beyond delivery, but it’s definitely way more than that.”
Kaylynn, of Jackson, was 35 years old as she prepared to give birth a second time. What she found in Adena’s midwife team was a care partner that involved her in decisions about her treatment. The midwives took the time to really listen to her concerns, then offered the insight and professional opinions she needed to hear to make those decisions.
Adena’s certified nurse midwives provide women age 12 through menopause with personalized care tailored for their specific stage in life. In addition to labor and delivery, midwives provide wellness care, infection testing and treatment, birth control services, and more.
Members of the midwife team were alongside Kaylynn during most of the birthing process and also helped her with her post-partum care. Kaylynn said other members of her care team — from the nursing staff and physicians to a certified registered nurse anesthetist and others — were also right there making her feel comfortable and providing excellent care.
“There was not a single individual who wasn’t top tier,” Kaylynn said.
Now the proud parent of a little girl, Kaylynn doesn’t hesitate to recommend the midwife team at Adena to others.
“They definitely go above and beyond and take their time to really listen to you,” she said. “I don’t think most people understand just how great they are.”
