Community members, Chillicothe Mayor Jack Everson, law enforcement and a number of Adena Health System physicians and employees took part in the Take a Walk in Her Shoes event held Thursday in downtown Chillicothe. The event was hosted by Adena’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) group and members of the Ross County Sexual Assault Response Team.
The annual event is held to raise awareness that sexual assault happens everywhere, and victims include children, teens, adults and the elderly. Last year, 136 patients of sexual assault were seen at Adena, the majority of those patients were children.
Adena’s nurse examiners are specially-trained to work with law enforcement in collecting physical evidence from assault victims, as well as providing comfort to the patient. Members of the Ross County Sexual Assault Response Team are community members trained to work with victims of all ages by helping them move forward after a sexual assault.
Highlights of yesterday’s event included remarks about the importance of services for sexual assault victims, followed by a more light-hearted display of men walking in women’s shoes of every style. There were contests for the most creative, highest heel and best strut.
Winners included: Michael Glansman was voted Most Creative for his acrylic six-inch stiletto heels; Dr. Alex Maranzana won Best Strut (after a “strut-off” with Ralph Metzger); and a local teen, Clay Edler, won for Highest Heel.
Following speakers and the contests, participants walked from the Ross County Courthouse to Yoctangee Park. Proceeds from the event go toward training volunteer sexual assault victim advocates and providing supplies for assault victims, such as clothing.
