Adena Pike Medical Center (APMC) has earned a 5-Star Hospital Rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS released its Overall Hospital Quality Star ratings to the consumer-oriented website Hospital Compare. According to Hospital Compare, APMC is one of just three critical access hospitals in Ohio and one of 27 critical access hospitals in the nation to receive a 5-star rating.

Hospital Compare provides information on how well hospitals provide recommended care to their patients. This information can help consumers make informed decisions about where to go for health care. Hospital Compare allows consumers to select multiple hospitals, and directly compare their performance measures.

CMS looks at 64 measures that fall into seven groups: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. A hospital's rating is calculated using only as many measures for which data is available.

“Adena Pike Medical Center’s acknowledgment as a 5-star hospital has substantial impact when we talk about Adena being top-of-mind and the first choice for health care for patients and their families,” said Jeff Graham, Adena President and CEO. “This rating sets us apart from other health systems and hospitals in the region, and is a testament to the quality of services our physicians and caregivers provide.”

“We are proud to be among the nation’s top hospitals,” said Dave Zanni, APMC Senior Operations Executive Officer. “This has been a joint effort of our frontline staff, leadership, and the community. This 5-star rating is evidence that patients and families can come here and be treated effectively, timely and receive superior care and excellent service.”

Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of Medicare and the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA). The HQA was a public-private collaboration established in December 2002 to promote reporting on hospital quality of care. HQA consists of organizations that represent consumers, hospitals, providers, employers, accrediting organizations and federal agencies. The HQA effort was intended to make it easier for consumers to make informed health care decisions and to support efforts to improve quality in U.S. hospitals.
