Specialty Programs or Treatments, notable partnerships?

Since 2019, Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute annually has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification for instituting best practices for clinical outcomes, reflecting our commitment to providing safe and high-quality patient care.

What technologies are used to help treat patients?

We offer stem cell treatment for arthritis, a procedure in which your body's own stem cells are harvested, processed, and injected into arthritic areas. Once placed, the stem cells divide and multiply, helping to regenerate healthy tissue that aids in healing and can lessen pain and loss of movement.

Title : Dr. John Gabis
When Dr. John Gabis was still feeling pain less than two years after receiving a knee replacement from a former surgeon of the health system, he knew from his own professional background that it was very unusual.

The surgery had successfully addressed a problem with arthritis in the knee, but there remained a connective tissue problem in the joint putting him in enough pain that he eventually decided to see Dr. Neel Patel with Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute to see what could be done to address it.

“Dr. Patel helped me with making sure we had the right diagnosis, that my joint was strong and my muscles around it were strong, and that I was doing what I could to prevent another surgery if it was avoidable,” Dr. Gabis said. “Having done all that, I was still having significant pain and he said we have to do surgery.”

There was a further complication. That decision was made just two months after Dr. Gabis received a lymphoma diagnosis. It was Dr. Patel’s response to the diagnosis, Dr. Gabis added, that makes him a special physician.

“He took time to consider my situation whenever he was planning my surgery, and to me this was critical,” Dr. Gabis said. “He chose an implant and chose an approach that helped protect the implant if my lymphoma was to have spread and would have impacted my bone marrow. He put a barrier between the bone marrow and the joint implant. That’s what’s important, he took into account my specific, unique circumstances.”

The surgery was performed successfully in March of 2022.

“I was in dramatically less pain after the second surgery than the first, and that’s not usually the case,” he said. “Usually, when you have to do a redo, they have to do a lot of remodeling and I expected more pain, but my pain was really well controlled.”

Nobody knows what makes for a successful physician better than another physician. Dr. Gabis was impressed with the way Dr. Patel educated him as he does with every patient on what to expect, which in turn has helped him better prepare his own patients for receiving care at AOSI. He also praised the great lengths AOSI support staff take to make sure patients are in the best shape possible before surgery so they can have the best outcome possible.

For Dr. Gabis, that outcome has allowed him to be able to walk and ride a stationary bike for more than an hour pain-free and to be able to go about all of his normal daily activities without impairment.

For other potential patients, those positive outcomes are a priority at AOSI.

“It’s about you,” Dr. Gabis said. “It’s not about how fast the surgery is done – many of the physicians, actually, would prefer to find a way for you not to have to have surgery if possible. They just want you to have your best life. That phrase, ‘We do what we love so you can, too,’ that’s absolutely for real.”
