There are four main types of anesthesia. The type of procedure and health of the patient are some of the factors considered to determine the appropriate anesthesia. The general categories of anesthesia include:
- Local anesthesia: Numbs a small area of the body. Patient is awake and alert.
- Conscious or intravenous sedation (IV): A mild sedative is used to relax and relieve pain. Patient is awake but may not remember the procedure afterward.
- Regional anesthesia: Blocks pain in an area of the body, such as an arm or leg. Epidural anesthesia, which numbs sensation from the waist down, is a type of regional anesthesia.
- General anesthesia: Affects the whole body. Patient is asleep for the procedure and doesn’t feel any pain. There is no memory of the procedure afterward.
