If you are relatively healthy, and your prostate cancer has not spread beyond the prostate gland, you might be a candidate for surgery.
- Department of:
- Adena Regional Medical Center
During the treatment known as a prostatectomy, surgeons remove all or part of the prostate gland. They might also remove nearby lymph nodes if cancerous cells have spread there.
It’s important to know that prostate surgery carries some serious risks and side effects. Nerves that control sexual function and continence can be damaged. So if your tumor is too close to a nerve that controls one of these functions, surgery might not be the best option.
Your Adena medical team will help you decide if surgery is the right treatment for your specific cancer.
The Da Vinci Difference
To minimize these risks, many of our surgeons are trained to use the da Vinci Surgical System. This state-of-the-art technology allows surgeons to operate with robotic tools. It’s less invasive, the results are more precise and patients recover faster than those who undergo traditional open surgery.
Research shows that da Vinci surgeries are safer for patients. Some of the benefits include:
- Sparing the nerves during surgery
- Less bleeding
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery and return to normal activities
- Faster return of sexual function
- Full return of urinary function within six months for most patients
