Surgery
Surgery for bone and joint problems is a last resort, but sometimes it’s the best option. At Adena, orthopaedic surgeons are trained in various surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery — with a focus on reducing pain, shortening recovery and returning you to normal activity.
Immediate Surgery for Traumatic Injuries
Every year, more than 60 percent of accidental injuries in the U.S. affect the musculoskeletal system. These injuries include sprains, strains, fractures and more.
Some injuries require immediate surgery. For example, serious breaks — such as a bone protruding through the skin — require immediate care to prevent infection and reset the bone so that it can heal properly.
If a back injury is causing numbness or weakness in the legs or a loss of bowel or bladder function, emergency spine surgery may be needed to relieve the compression on the nerve.
Planned Surgery
If you’re in pain and conservative treatments such as physical therapy, injections and medications haven’t worked, surgery also might be your best option. While Adena’s team of sports medicine doctors, physiatrists and orthopaedic experts endorse a conservative approach to treatment, our highly trained orthopaedic surgeons perform a full array of procedures for bone and joint injuries.
