Nonsurgical Treatment Options

Bone and joint pain can keep you from enjoying the activities you love. It can even make it difficult to manage your daily life.
Many joint conditions as well as herniated discs and other injuries can be improved without surgery. And while more than a million hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed every year, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, most people with arthritis or other joint problems can experience relief without surgery.
Common nonsurgical treatments offered by Adena include:
Orthotics. If you’re experiencing hip or knee pain, your physician might recommend arch supports to shift the pressure you feel when you walk. Braces can also be used to support the joint.
Medications. Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) can ease mild pain and help reduce inflammation. For more serious injuries, your doctor might prescribe higher-dose versions of these drugs or medications like codeine.
Injections. Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation and offer pain relief that lasts as long as a few months. Injections of hyaluronic acid derivatives are considered lubricants and provide pain relief by giving the joint some cushioning.
Physical therapy. During physical therapy, you focus on strengthening the muscles around painful joints to help stabilize those joints. You also might improve your posture to reduce back pain.
