What is the Centering® Model of Healthcare?

Centering is a model of healthcare that builds on the collective understanding and shared experiences of the group. By bringing individuals at the same stage of pregnancy (or infant care) together, the model offers women friendship, support, and more time to explore the issues that impact their health, pregnancy, and babies.

As members of a supportive group, women engage in facilitated discussions about their health, set personal goals for themselves, monitor their own blood pressure and weight, and undergo an individual checkup with their clinician. Studies show women who participate in Centering groups feel better prepared for labor, birth, and infant care.

Centering Healthcare Institute

With more than a decade of expertise, the Centering Healthcare Institute (CHI)is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve maternal and child health by actively engaging patients in goal setting, skill building, and peer support. The Centering model includes three components of care: assessment, learning, and community building.

Centering is an innovative approach that has been nationally recognized by leading healthcare experts because it offers improved results for a number of factors. For example, the model supports fewer preterm births, healthier birth weights, improved breastfeeding, and increased immunization rates.
