Bronchial Thermoplasty

New asthma treatment results in significant improvements in quality of life for 8 out of 10 patients.

People who suffer from difficult-to-control asthma or frequent asthma attacks can now benefit from bronchial thermoplasty, a new, effective outpatient asthma treatment available at Adena Pulmonology, Critical Care & Sleep Services, the premier pulmonary clinic in southern Ohio. Bronchial thermoplasty uses mild heat to reduce excess smooth muscle tissue in the airways, resulting in less airway constriction when exposed to triggers and during asthma attacks. As a result, bronchial thermoplasty reduces the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.

Patients treated with bronchial thermoplasty experienced a 78 percent drop in emergency room visits as compared to before the procedure, according to a study published in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology. The same study shows bronchial thermoplasty to be effective for up to five years. Additionally, one-third of patients were able to reduce inhaled corticosteroid usage by more than 50 percent.

About Bronchial Thermoplasty

Bronchial thermoplasty is a new procedure available for asthma treatment. The procedure uses a bronchoscope (an instrument with a camera on one end that allows a physician to see the inside of airways) and radio frequency energy (mild heat) to reduce the amount of excessive smooth muscle tissue in airways. Less smooth muscle decreases the narrowing and constricting of airways when exposed to triggers and during an asthma attack.

How Bronchial Thermoplasty is Performed

Bronchial thermoplasty consists of three outpatient procedures, which take less than an hour each. During each procedure, a physician inserts a bronchoscope through the mouth or nose and into the lungs. Mild heat is then applied to remove excessive smooth muscle. Typically, patients remain in the outpatient setting for a few hours after the procedure to recover from sedation but then go home.

Benefits of Bronchial Thermoplasty

As a result of bronchial thermoplasty, studies show patients experience the following benefits:

  • 32% fewer severe asthma attacks
  • 84% fewer asthma-related emergency room visits
  • 66% fewer days lost from work, school, and other activities due to asthma symptoms

Additionally, 8 out of 10 patients treated with bronchial thermoplasty see a significant improvement in their quality of life.

Candidates for Bronchial Thermoplasty

Asthma sufferers who may benefit from bronchial thermoplasty include those who are 18 and older and who display one of the following characteristics:

  • Difficult-to-control asthma
  • Frequent asthma exacerbations
  • Frequent use of steroids

Patients should be individually evaluated by a physician to determine if bronchial thermoplasty may be appropriate.
