Derek is a native of Chillicothe, Ohio and graduate of Paint Valley High School. He obtained his Associates Degree in Nursing from Ohio University in Chillicothe, Ohio in 2009 and a Master of Science in Nursing in Acute Care and Adult Gerontology from Walden University in Minneapolis, MN in 2018. He is a proud Ambassador and member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) nationally as well as local chapter and has served as a Research Abstract Review Committee member. Derek is also a member of both the Society of Critical Care Medicine national organization and Ohio chapter. He maintains certifications in Trauma Nursing (TNCC), NIH Stroke Certification (NIHSS), as well as National Certification as a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN). Prior to Adena, Derek’s experience is robust in Cardiac Surgery, Interventional Cardiology and Critical Care in Virginia Beach and North Carolina. Derek’s experience includes Impella Cardiac Perfusion Support, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), Invasive bedside procedures, and the care and management of critically ill patients. Derek also belongs to the Seaboard Medical Association in Kitty Hawk, NC. He married his wife Katie who is also an ICU Nurse and spent three years travel nursing across the country in various Level 1 Trauma, and Academic Medical Centers. In 2007, Derek had the distinct honor of presenting the lifetime of achievement award in Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery to the heart surgeon who performed his Open-Heart Surgery in 2001 at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Ronald McDonald House Red Tie Gala. Today, Derek combines his experience as a patient, his love for serving others, his faith in Christ, and his nursing expertise to provide excellent evidence-based care to the Critical Care and Inpatient populations at Adena Regional Medical Center. Derek enjoys spending time playing drums for his church, local and international missions, fishing, hiking, and exploring the U.S. National Parks.
