Avoiding the flu this season takes one simple step, getting an influenza vaccine. The flu is caused by one of several strains of influenza virus that infect the nose, throat and lungs.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), now is the time for everyone six months and older to get a flu shot. People are advised to get a flu vaccine before flu begins spreading in the community. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against flu. CDC recommends people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. Though vaccines are still beneficial later and are offered throughout the flu season.
Adena Health System offers many flu shot clinics, making it easy for you and your family to get vaccinated. Most of the time, your insurance company will cover the cost of a yearly flu shot. If you wish to schedule a visit for a flu vaccination, please contact your doctor’s office, or call 740-779-FIND to get established with a doctor at a time and location that is convenient for you.
