The body’s vascular system is made up of a network of blood vessels that carry blood and nutrients to and from the heart, brain, organs and muscles throughout the body. In fact, blood is the life force of every cell in your body. Also known as the circulatory system, it includes the arteries, capillaries and veins.

Vascular diseases can include a range of conditions from varicose veins to hardening of the arteries. Some of these can be quite serious, and can lead to blood clots, stroke, coronary artery disease, or death.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common problem where arteries become narrowed due to plaque buildup and can reduce blood flow to the legs. It’s a painful condition and can affect the patient’s ability to stand or walk and can lead to amputation, organ damage, and long-term disability, in addition to increasing the patient’s risk of developing coronary artery and heart disease. Adena can test for PAD using a simple noninvasive tool. Treatment begins with basic exercise and medication, and managing cholesterol and blood pressure.

Aortic stent grafting is used to treat a variety of vascular diseases, but most commonly it is used to reinforce a weak spot in the artery called an aneurysm. Blood pressure can cause these weak spots to bulge and rupture over time, leading to internal bleeding and sometimes death. To help reinforce these weak areas, a vascular surgeon can place a metal mesh fabric inside the artery at the weak spot, which then allows blood to flow normally without putting pressure on the arterial bulge.
