With the use of a tiny green laser, the GreenLight procedure offers patients a much quicker recovery time when compared to other procedures for the treatment of enlarged prostates. GreenLight is usually outpatient, although sometimes an overnight stay is required.
The minimally invasive procedure, also called prostate laser surgery, is used to vaporize prostate tissue that blocks urine from exiting the bladder. Prostate enlargement, technically called benign prostatic hyperplasia or benign prostatic hypertrophy, is the main cause of frequent urination, slow stream, hesitancy and nighttime urination in men.
The innovative procedure is done by way of a thin fiber inserted into the urethra through a cystoscope, therefor, no incisions are required. The fiber delivers an energy flow that quickly removes excess prostate tissue.
Once the tissue is removed, urine can flow naturally and urinary problems are alleviated. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the patient.
Because there are fewer complications and less risk of bleeding with the GreenLight procedure, the return back to everyday life is much faster. Some patients on anti-coagulation medicine also can have the procedure done without being taken off their medications.
