Hips and knees are the most commonly repaired joints, followed by shoulders. During a joint replacement surgery, the affected joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint, made of metal or ceramic material. This procedure, followed by rehab therapy, can restore function in the joint and lessen pain. And more good news: Success rates are high – in fact, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that more than 90 percent of hip replacements do not require revision.
