Since it was approved by the FDA in 2000 for general laparoscopic surgery, the da Vinci^® Surgical System has been used to tackle some of the most common surgical procedures in the U.S. It is now used to perform more than 80 percent of all radical prostatectomies.

While the minimally invasive technology leads to an impressive list of benefits for patients—including less pain and scarring, and a much quicker return to normal activities—the effectiveness of daVinci surgery also sets it apart from other types of surgery.

Multiple studies have shown that daVinci surgery for procedures such as myomectomy (to remove uterine fibroids) and prostatectomy results in fewer postoperative infections, less blood loss, fewer complications, and decreased length of hospital stay. In addition, daVinci surgery for prostate cancer also typically has much better results in terms of urinary continence and erectile function recovery.

Single-Site da Vinci procedures now available for gallbladder removal, benign hysterectomy, and removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries are even less invasive. Performed through a single incision in the belly button, they leave virtually no scar and result in less tissue trauma than multi-site procedures.
