We understand that hemorrhoids can be very uncomfortable and irritating. But you are not alone and Adena’s Colon and Rectal Services is here to help treat people with hemorrhoids in southern Ohio.

Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. It is estimated that about half of the U.S. population suffers from symptomatic hemorrhoids by age 50.

Hemorrhoids are a group of vessels in the anal canal that normally serve as a cushion. When they become swollen or inflamed they can cause pain, burning, itching, and bleeding.

Hemorrhoids can be irritated by hard or loose stools. Straining or spending too much time on the toilet can also cause hemorrhoid inflammation. Women often experience their first difficulty with hemorrhoids during pregnancy or after delivery.

There are two types of hemorrhoids:

Internal hemorrhoids

  • Located just inside the anus
  • Prone to bleeding, burning, itching, and dull aching pain
  • Can become swollen and protrude (fall) out

External hemorrhoids

  • Located at the outside edge of the anus
  • Can become swollen and fill with blood (thrombosis)
  • Can cause severe pain
  • Can burst and bleed

Diagnosis

“Hemorrhoid symptoms” are not always from hemorrhoids. Let our trained specialist discuss your symptoms and perform an evaluation in the office to make a formal diagnosis and treatment plan. The examination is not painful and takes only a short amount of time. We respect your privacy and are diligent in making your visit as comfortable as possible.

Treatment Options

  • Non-Operative Procedures
  • Dietary Changes
  • Topical Medications
  • Sitz Baths
  • IRC (Infrared Coagulation)
  • Operative Procedures
  • THD – Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization
  • PPH - Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids
  • Traditional Excisional Hemorrhoidectomy

At Adena, we respect your privacy and strive to make your visit as comfortable as possible. We offer many treatment options for hemorrhoids. Efforts are always made to use the most conservative treatment options first. Topical medications and dietary changes are effective in most cases. If hemorrhoids need a slightly more aggressive treatment in the office, Dr. Michael Fealk of Adena Colon and Rectal Services offers a technique using infrared light (IRC) to treat the hemorrhoids. InfraRed Coagulation does not involve cutting, minimizes discomfort, takes only minutes to perform and allows patients to resume their normal activities without delay.

You should also be seen if you have rectal bleeding. It may be necessary to check for other, more serious causes of the bleeding. Take our online quiz to see if your symptoms could be from hemorrhoids.
