Our Cancer Center is there from Diagnosis to Survivorship

A cancer diagnosis can shake you. But when patients are ready to fight, there is one key question: What happens now?
When the Adena Cancer Center opened in January 2012, the state-of-the-art facility was designed to provide the answers to that question all in one place—and as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“When patients call us, they get an appointment within 72 hours of that phone call,” explains Brenna Eldridge, BSN, R.N., manager of medical oncology at the Adena Cancer Center. “When the patient arrives, the physician has already reviewed the medical history, pathology report and imaging studies.”
Depending on the type of cancer and how advanced it is, there may be various appropriate treatment approaches. Each patient’s case is then discussed at a Tumor Board. These cancer-specific boards—one for breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and head and neck cancer—are made up of oncologists, surgeons, nurses, patient navigators, pathologists and radiologists, who collaborate to discuss the best course of action for that particular patient. The tumor boards are scheduled to meet twice weekly.
Then, in one day, a patient will meet with several members of their care team, including a radiation oncologist, medical oncologist and a surgeon as well as a patient navigator.
“That way, the patient doesn’t have to make multiple trips to the hospital,” Eldridge says.
Patients are presented with their treatment options and the recommendations of the Tumor Board. In some cases, there may be a clear treatment path, but in others, it may come down to the patient’s preference.
“It’s really important that patients also participate in their care,” Eldridge adds.
Advanced Cancer Treatment Options
Certified by the American College of Surgeons, the Adena Cancer Center provides advanced care, including chemotherapy medications and radiation to shrink and destroy tumors and surgical options to remove cancer. Adena also is using the latest biological agents that help the patient’s natural immune system fight the cancer. Plus, ongoing clinical trials offer patients access to the newest innovative cancer therapies.
Keeping track of appointments and understanding the treatment process can be overwhelming. Adena’s patient navigators are here to help patients and their families and caregivers manage treatment, answering questions and connecting them to valuable resources along the way.
