Local Doctor Treats Unwanted Leg Veins with New Technology - 2/4/2008

CHILLICOTHE – Patients suffering from unsightly leg and spider veins can rest assured that the latest breakthrough in vein treatment is now available at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe.

The Lumenis Laser is a new device that uses state-of-the-art Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser technology to correct a variety of benign vascular conditions, including unsightly leg and spider veins, in a series of in-office procedures.   Introduced in 1995, IPL laser treatments have changed the lives of tens of thousands of patients.

Spider veins are caused when veins in the legs become weak, causing blood to leak back and collect.   The pooled blood enlarges the veins, which become varicose, appearing twisted and bulged.   Spider veins can also occur due to hormone changes, inherited factors, pregnancy, obesity, and sun exposure.

Symptoms include aching pain, tiredness, heaviness, numbness and irritation in the legs, swelling, and darkening of the skin.

“The IPL system uses a burst of intense pulsed light and/or laser energy to target and selectively destroy blood vessels of varying sizes and at various depths without damaging surrounding healthy tissue,” says James R. Manazer, MD, one of the first physicians to employ IPL technology in the area.   “Unlike conventional modalities, which can be painful, IPL is non-invasive, and involves no cutting or needles.   Patients see the veins react almost immediately and continue to disappear over the next two to three weeks.”

When the intense pulsed light penetrates the damaged blood vessel, it is sealed and eventually reabsorbed into the body.   Patients can leave the doctor’s office after the procedure and quickly resume normal activities.

Varicose veins are a very common problem with approximately 50 to 55 percent of American women and 40 to 45 percent of American men suffering from some type of vein problem.   Women are more prone to suffer from varicose veins because of pregnancy.

Dr. Manazer received his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine.
A fellowship-trained, board-certified vascular surgeon, Dr. Manazer has practiced in Chillicothe since 2006, and received specific training in Quantum Laser treatment.

IPL technology is also very effective in treating other benign vascular conditions such as birthmarks, broken facial capillaries and rosacea.   The system’s unique design and versatility allows physicians to improve several different conditions, translating to added convenience and less “downtime” for patients.
