After many months of completing due diligence, Pike Health Services will be joining Adena Health System, effective early next year.

Earlier this year, after preliminary discussions regarding partnerships with other healthcare organizations, Pike Health Services entered into formal negotiations with Adena. Since then, senior officials from Adena and Pike have been meeting to complete the work on how both organizations would join services to continue to best serve the residents of Pike County.

In the past several days, the board of trustees from both organizations signed and approved affiliation documentation which will join Pike Health Services and Adena.

“We are excited about Pike becoming a part of Adena. This will be a win-win for patients in this region,” said Jeff Graham, Adena’s Chief Strategy Officer, and Craig Solle, Pike’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

“In today’s healthcare market, there are very few small hospitals remaining independent and most like Pike are seeking a partnership from a larger system. As our operational costs increase, reimbursement rates decline and healthcare reform continues to take shape, it made sense for Pike to affiliate with a larger health system and a local regional provider, like Adena,” Solle said.

Even before negotiations began between the two organizations, Adena and Pike had a good working relationship together, with Adena providing surgical services support to Pike Health Services.

“Patients will benefit the most from this affiliation,” said Solle.

“Adena will be enhancing existing services and developing new patient services at Pike. There will also be an extensive investment in a technology platform surrounding the patient Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The EMR will drive real time patient information to their providers which will enhance quality outcomes in patient care.” Graham said.

The arrangement also provides Pike with improved access to capital investment resources, which are vital to most small hospitals in today’s healthcare market.

“The long-term financial stability of our hospital and our ability to continue to provide services to our community were essential throughout the negotiations with Adena,” Solle said.

This relationship also enables Pike employee’s career advancement opportunities within Adena Health System, he said.

Moreover, this new partnership helps to advance Adena’s strategy for regional growth and keeping quality care “close to home” for the area residents and fulfilling Adena’s vision to become the best healthcare system in the nation, Graham said.

“I’m pleased that Adena and Pike have joined together in this affiliation. Relationships like this work to further improve health care to the people of southern Ohio,” said Mark Shuter, Adena’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Pike Health Services will become the second Critical Access Hospital to join Adena. In 1999, Adena Health System and Greenfield Medical Center joined together to create the Adena Greenfield Medical Center.

Very similar to Pike, Greenfield Medical Center was looking for a partner to continue operations and keep services available to the area residents of Highland county.

“Adena is very familiar with the operations and the importance to area residents having access to their community hospital and what it takes to have Pike Health Services continue to be a viable resource for the patients it serves,” Shuter said.

Today, Adena Greenfield Medical Center continues to grow patient services and has received recognition as one of the most profitable critical access hospitals in the nation.
